JIMMIES memories of Lakeside...

Back in 1964 (I believe) JIMMIE was lucky enough to be able to attend Lakeside Speedway and witness some of the great old coupe style racing going on there. It seemed like there were at least 100 of the old pre-war coupes on hand the night we were there and the racing was great. It was one of the first asphalt tracks I had ever been to and the I remember the sparks flying off the pavement as some of those crashes that night made it look like fireworks in the sky. It was indeed a good time! By the time I got back to Colorado, Lakeside Speedway was already history...those Sunday night races were a thing of the past. This program book I bought that night at Lakeside still remains in my collection and the featured driver in the 25 cent program was Joe Wyatt...his coupe was a little blue #34 Model A.

Joe Wyatt was the driver of this coupe. Left to right in this photo...Carl Wagner, Larry Conroy and driver Joe Wyatt. Kneeling is another Joe and Don Zimmer. Joe was a 3 year veteran of the coupes.

Thanks to viewer Jerry Toliver for passing on these Lakeside Speedway oldies. JIMMIE remembers going to Lakeside in 1964 and watching the action of the old early model coupes and sedans...and there was plenty of "action". Lakeside Speedway is now history along with nearby Englewood Speedway. At one time these two tracks were the Denver areas premire race tracks. May they rest in peace!
